Initial Ideas
In order to create the best possible documentary, it is important to discuss a range of potential documentary styles and premises. Our shooting location will be in Brighton therefore with a very low budget and time restrictions, it is important that we stick to this catchment area.
Old Police Cells Museum
The premise of this idea is that we would interview an ex-police officer who now works in the museum to give an insight into what is was like when it was open and many stories that come with this role. This could include many shots of the cells and artefacts that are on display there. It may be possible seeing as this is an police cell, to create an eerie documentary that includes suspense and a chilling factor.
Choccywoccydoodah
This chocolate shop is known worldwide and is known for it's amazing designs and interior. It has featured on television before therefore we know that if we were to use this idea for our documentary, it would gain a large audience whilst being fitting to Brighton as it is a popular tourist attraction. This premise could be filmed with a quirky filming style and therefore would allow us to experiment with a range of shot types and mise-en-scene. The negative aspects of using this as our idea is that it may be hard to gain permission to film and to find a free time to film as they are extremely busy and are likely to only participate if they are paid. In addition, as mentioned a downside to a popular tv channel having already featured this chocolate shop is that the idea has already been done and their idea may seem stolen.British Toy and Model Museum
The British Toy and Model Museum is a quaint museum in the heart of Brighton town that not many locals know about. This idea would allow for us to give locals an insight into what the museum has to offer and therefore might do the owners good in terms of creating visitors. This museum has a range of old British Toys and therefore would be interesting to view the elderly man who owns the museum in order for him to give us details on for example what toys were popular in each decade. This documentary would be heart-warming and nostalgic which may be a hit for the elderly in Brighton.
Brightons Fishing Museum
Brightons Fishing Museum is very fitting to the location and attracts a lot of interested fisherman and locals as it gives history and memorabilia to the fishing industry. The documentary would be targeted towards a niche audience, and similarly to the British Toy Museum and Old Police Cells, we would have a participatory interview with the museum's owner giving us an insight into the fishing industry over the years, with shots overlaid of equipment and archive footage.
Change in Brighton/Tourism in Brighton
Changes In Brighton would consist of interviews with residence in the Brighton and Hove area, giving a more geographical discussion of how Brighton has been adapting to tourism and other changes in recent years and what changes they'd be eager to see in the near future. This video could be useful for the council to gain an insight into the publics opinions and concerns, whilst also being interesting for the viewers to hear unfiltered opinions and discussions. In order to ensure that the documentary flows, we would include a handful of establishing shots of for example The Pier and allow for screens of explanations and titles to ensure the viewer understands what the participant has been asked and the locations they are discussing.
